Do comparisons actually work in changing peoples attitude?
Interesting research into theoretical papers that study the psychology behind choices that we, as humans make, our attitudes, behaviour, and how these all work in tandem.

'Foot in the door' method of persuasion. Involves convincing people of a small task in order to eventually ask more, in hopes that the person feels more connected having already interacted

It is clear that interaction is key.

Visual Research
I have recently been looking a lot into the visuals that corporations and brands use in order to greenwash. Chevron, an American oil company have a very hypocritical set of videos from the 70s that are almost comedic, which I believe, if set in the right way could be interesting.

What really surprised and made me interested in the video were the comments below though.

It seemed that people had not seen through the video the way that I did.

Why is that?

Moral Disengagement: The larger the group the lower the standards of morals.

Therefore, can we make a record or people's environmental responsibility?

'Quality is not an act, it is a habit'

Aristotle.
How do people working in these greedy corporations justify what they are doing?
Methods of diffusion:

Moral Dissonance:
I am normally a good person, this doesn't make me a bad person.

Denial:
Everybody else would do it right?

Lack of harm:
No one is being harmed right?

Necessity:
I had no other choice.

Justification by comparison:
Other people do worse:

Postponement:
I see that this might be wrong, but I choose not to think about that.
Why do we ignore obvious problems?
'The less control we think we have, the more likely we are to downplay it'

'If you think that someone around you will pick you up when you fall, you are much more likely to see a danger as being smaller'

In contrast to China, 'America is a very individualist culture'

'Are you willing to see things even if its not what you want?'

If you don't see what's in fromt of you, you're not dumb. You're human'

Greenwashing through advertising.

Why do people fall for it?

What aspects of psychology make it easy for us to be convinced? Or even not care at all?

Use of chevron oil advertisements in an adjusted way could be promising. How much exaggerating and greenwashing does it take for people to see through the irony? Do people care?

How do I visualise my research into the psychology behind peoples ability to avoid long term problems?

How do i visualise psychology, something that is not inherently visual?

Why is it so easy to convince that bad is actually good, but showing that good is actually bad is impossible?

Does it go back to the fight-or-flight aspect of human instinct?

Can we, as a race just not think collectively for the long term?

Human greed is inevitable if we stick to our fight-or-flight short term instincts, right?

We treat our future selves like strangers

https://www.newscientist.com/article/2127901-your-true-self-the-future-is-a-foreign-person/
We exaggerate our future selves.

"Whenever we put things off, we kind of make that future self our beast of burden,"
Simplified Concept:

As designers, we have a certain responsibilities that we must take care of when executing. But, unfortunately we have many psychological limitations that we are not fully aware of that limit our possibility for being a responsible future-thinking designer.

These limitations extend to the whole populations, but the responsibility lands on us to form the future.

Somehow, we must figure out how to visualise our future lives more clearly, thus giving ourselves a better future.

Super-simplified Concept:

We (as designers) cannot adequately visualise our future selves, therefore we make decisions that don't take our future into account.

How do we make better decisions for the world when we can't even make better decisions for ourselves?
